Job Description
The Coding Specialist/Trainee
accounts for coding and abstracting of patient encounters, including
diagnostic, procedural, supplies, NDC information, significant reportable
elements and complications. Researches and analyzes data needs for
reimbursement. Analyzes medical record and identifies documentation
deficiencies. Serves as resource and subject matter expert to other department
staff.
Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent. Trainee
– Experience commensurate with Certified Apprentice licensure. Must possess one
or more of the following certifications: Certified Professional Coder (CPC-A),
Certified Professional Coder-Hospital (COC-A), Certified Coding Specialist
(CCS-A) Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Certified Coding
Specialist-Procedural (CCS-P-A). If the certification expires, the
Coding Specialist Trainee will be placed on unpaid leave, and have 30 days to
produce a renewed certification. The
Coding Specialist Trainee’s employment is concluded on Day 31 if a current
certification is not produced.Specialist -
Experience
commensurate with fully Certified Coder licensure with International
Classification of Diseases (ICD-10), Current Procedure Terminology (CPT4), and
Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) coding systems, and other
related documentation requirements. Must possess one or more of the following
certifications: Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Professional
Coder-Hospital (COC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) Registered Health
Information Technician (RHIT) and/or Certified Coding Specialist-Procedural
(CCS-P). Experience in outpatient coding in Medicare,
Medicaid, and third party liability billing area. Completion of an accredited
Health Information Management program preferred.
