ICD-10

ICD-10 Overview

ICD, the International Classification of Diseases, is published by the World Health Organization (WHO) and used worldwide for morbidity and mortality statistics, reimbursement systems, and automated decision support in health care. On October 1, 2015, the ICD-9 code sets used to report medical diagnoses will be replaced by ICD-10 code sets. This is a significant change that affects all HIPAA covered entities. The change to ICD-10 does not affect CPT coding for outpatient procedures and physician services.

EPIC Management LP’s ICD-10 Project

EPIC Management, L.P. is committed to a successful transition and our ICD-10 project is well underway. EPIC’s ICD-10 Transition Project team’s process includes but is not limited to: 1) Planning phase, 2) Risk and Readiness Assessments Phase, 3) Education and Testing Phase, and finally 4) Implementation Phase. At EPIC, we have completed upgrades to our major systems impacted by this change.

As you can see, it is important that everyone be prepared for this transition. Adequate preparation consists of planning, assessment, communication, education and training, clinical documentation improvement, work flow modifications, testing and finally implementation. It is imperative that each Care Partner develop their own implementation plan to prepare for a successful transition. Some of the benefits of this change include more precise documentation, and improved coding that will lead to accurate claims, and timely payments.

EPIC is currently working to establish a training program and in collaboration with OPTUM beginning in the second quarter of 2015. We’ve also secured CME qualified provider education through AAPC, the American Academy of Professional Coders.

EPIC has assembled a toolkit to help our care partners. The toolkit consists of links to industry resources including CMS implementation plans, a vendor readiness questionnaire, a simplified project plan and checklist of key activities for getting started.
